We take pride in our strong academic reputation in EMS education. This page allows us to explain our requirements to
be successful in our EMT program and to be eligible to take the National Registry certification exam.
Module Exams
The student will
take 12 module exams through out the course of the semster that will be made up of multiple chapters on each module from the
course textbook. The Baldy View Regional Occupational Program has adopted a module re-take policy for the Emergency
Medical Technician course. A student must receive a score of 80% or better on
all module exams. If a student receives less than 80% on a module exam, the student
will be allowed to retake the exam. The student must then receive a score of
85% or better on the retake exam. A student is only allowed to retake a maximum
of 2 module exams throughout the entire semester. You cannot retake the same
module exam more than once. If a student has already used their 2 retakes and
receives a score of less than 80% on a third module exam then they will be dropped from the program. Any student that does not receive a score of 85% or better on the retake exam, the student will also be
dropped from the program. High school students may remain in the class for credit only as per the student handbook,
but are ineligible to take the National Registry certification examination.
Quizzes
Students will be given a quiz the following day after they have had the powerpoint lecture on the chapter in the textbook.
Each student must be present the day of the quiz to be able to take it. If a student shows up to class late or is absent,
they will forfeit their opportunity to take that particular quiz. The quizzes are for the student to gauge how well
they learned and understood the chapter lecture and to advise them if they need to study more on a particular subject matter.
The quizzes do NOT count towards the students' overall grade.
Current Event Article
Each student will be required to write up a summary on
a current event article in the field of health care or EMS. The article can be obtained from a magazine, website,
or newspaper. A copy of the article must be included and stapled to the student’s
summary that they are going to turn in for credit. The current event article must meet the following requirements prior to turning it in to one
of the instructors for credit:
In the field of EMS, there is a lot of documentation regarding patient care. It is important to have clear writing skills that will in turn help your documentation on your patient
care reports (PCR’s), especially in the narrative section. This assignment
is worth 25 points. This current event article is to be turned in anytime prior
to the second to the last week of class. It can be turned
in to any of the classroom EMT instructors. Please refer to your class calendar
for the last day to turn in this assignment. There will be NO exceptions
and this assignment will NOT be accepted if turned in past the due date.
Medical Report (Extra Credit)
Each student will be required to write a report on one of the following subject areas:
a body system, a body organ or a disease process. The topic of this report is
up to the student as long as it falls under one of the previously listed categories.
Once a specific topic has been decided upon by the student, the student must speak with the EMT Program Director and
let him know what that topic will be. The purpose of this is to not have topics
duplicated by the students.
Here are a few examples of topics to write your report on:
-
Body System (Respiratory, Cardiovascular, Digestive, etc)
-
Body Organ (Heart, Lungs, Pancreas, Brain, etc.)
-
Disease Process (Diabetes, Heart Disease, Hepatitis, Asthma, etc.)
The report must meet the following requirements prior to turning it in to one of the instructors
for credit:
In the field of EMS, there are many topics you could choose to do your report
on. I encourage you to pick a topic that interests you and something you want
to learn more about. This assignment is worth 50 points. This report is to be
turned in anytime prior to the second to the last week of class. It can be turned
in to any of the classroom EMT instructors. Please refer to your class calendar
for the last day to turn this assignment in. There will be NO exceptions
and this assignment will NOT be accepted if turned in past the due date.
Course Completion Certificate
Each student that successfully passes all module exams, skills testing, clinical shifts, ambulance ride alongs,
turns in all required assignments and maintains a minimum of 80% overall average during EMT course will then earn a course
completion certifcate. Upon earning a course completion certificate the EMT student will be eligible to take the National
Registry EMT Basic certification examination which is the State of California's certifying EMT test.
Students will also receive an American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR card.
Letters of Recommendation
Students are encouraged to do their best on the module exams and all course work throughout the EMT course. The
EMT Program Director will write personal letters of recommendation for the top three students for each semester.
